Digital Audio Recorder
Another one of the most essential pieces of equipment used in paranormal investigating, a digital voice recorder is essential for collecting EVPs (Electronic Voice Phenomena). While spirits do not always manifest visually, they can still manifest audibly.
Temperature Guns
These are used to detect the temperature in a specific location. These are usually tested throughout a room to set a base temperature. Any detection of a variation in temperature change could be a signal that a spirit is nearby. The concept is that spirits can cause changes in temperature when present.
K2/EMF Meter
This is a basic, but essential piece of equipment to help with investigating. It is a common theory that spirits can emit electromagnetic radiation or draw from EMF fields to manifest. As a result, an area of high EMF can denote that a spirit is present. These meters give readings of any present EMF anomalies.
FLIR IR Camera
This camera is also known as a thermal imaging camera. These cameras detect heat anomalies, such as “cold spots”. The theory behind this is that spirits can cause noticeable drops in room temperature. Different heat signatures will show up on the FLIR in different colors.
SLS Camera
This camera tracks motion in the shape of stick figures. The camera detects various points of axis, and from there detects points of motion. If a person was being filmed, it would detect your standard shape (arms, legs, torso, and head). In the paranormal field.
Spirit Box
The spirit box is a unique piece of equipment. The box itself sweeps through AM/FM radio channels at a preset rate. The idea behind the spirit box is that spirits can manipulate and speak directly through the channels as they cycle.
Ovilus
The ovilus is one of the most unique pieces of equipment for paranormal investigating. Using a database of programmed words, this tool is a speech-synthesis device that utters words based on electromagnetic fields, atmospheric pressure, and temperature.
Light Up Ball
This is a simple ball that lights up when it moves. The concept behind these is that a spirit may be able to manipulate these to move. They are particularly effective when encountering a child spirit.
Music Box
Typically, a music box contains a motion sensor that makes it play music when a spirit is nearby. While normal motion sensors work fine, the music box is a great choice if you encounter a spirit who is curious, or if children are reported at a location.
Pendulum
Pendulums are a traditional form of communication in paranormal investigating. Pendulums are a heavy object connected to the end of a chain. One person holds on to the chain, allowing the heavy object to hang. As the object hangs, questions are asked the object will move in a certain motion as an answer for “yes”, and a different motion for “no.”
Laser Grid
The laser grid creates a spread of a series of green or red laser dots inside of a darkened area or room. In a paranormal investigation, the idea is that when a spirit passes, it will cause a visible disturbance or an absence of light.
REMPod
This is a piece of equipment that monitors both EMF (electromagnetic fields) and temperature fluctuations. When the REM pod detects something breaking through its EMF field, or a significant change in temperature, it sets off an alert that can then be further investigated.
Point and Shoot Camera
A must have for any paranormal investigator. A simple digital camera can be one of the easiest to use for evidence capture. Point-and-shoot cameras can adjust to your surroundings. Most digital cameras can change settings based on your surroundings.
Full Spectrum Camera
A full spectrum camera, on the other hand, is a video camera that captures the entire spectrum of light from ultraviolet to infrared. It is a common belief in the paranormal field that spirits may only be visible in the UV or IR light spectrum, so, only these special cameras have a chance of capturing footage.
